Cyber fraud has emerged as one of the most prolific and easiest modes of deception today, given the plethora of digital platforms and our reliance on them. In a recent development, two residents of Kavadiguda in Hyderabad fell victim to a malicious APK file fraud, resulting in a combined loss of more than 6 lakh through unauthorised bank transactions. The incidents, reported on August 24 and 30, highlight the potential dangers lurking in something as innocuous as a messaging platform.

In the first case, a 48-year-old man received an APK file on WhatsApp, titled RTO CHALLAN. Misunderstanding it to be an official document, he opened the file, after which unauthorised debits of Rs 51,226 from a loan account and Rs 50,000 from his provident fund account were carried out, causing a loss of Rs 1,01,226. In the second instance, a 41-year-old man discovered that Rs 5 lakh had been siphoned from his HDFC Bank account through four transactions. It was later found that an APK file named RTA CHALLAN 140.apk had been installed on his mobile without his knowledge.

Investigators suspect that the victims' phones were compromised by the malicious files, enabling cyber fraudsters to gain access to sensitive financial details. Police have urged the public not to download or install suspicious APK files received through messaging platforms and has asked media outlets to issue advisories warning citizens against such frauds. They emphasised that official agencies do not share challans or documents via unauthorised mobile applications.

These types of frauds are on the rise, and extreme vigilance is necessary. Whichever app you use, ensure it's authorised and checked, and be cautious about files and links you open, even if they seem familiar. As technology evolves, so do crimes.
