Summer Spending: Clubs Spent Almost $10 Billion On Transfers Globally

Record-breaking dollars were moved in football's 2022 summer transfer window, according to FIFA's Global Transfer Report, with Premier League clubs spending nearly $7 billion of that total. The figures reveal just how much the transfer market has exploded in recent years, with the 2022 summer window spend nearly double the next-highest figure, which was recorded in 2019.

Of the almost $10 billion spent globally, almost $1 billion went to clubs in France, while almost $600 million went to German clubs. The report did not include figures for the ongoing January window, which has seen football's biggest star, Erling Haaland, change clubs.

The ever-increasing money being pumped into the sport has led to concern over its sustainability, with many fearing a bubble could burst in the near future. FIFA's report also detailed the huge number of players who are moving clubs without a transfer fee being paid, thanks to expiry of contracts and free agency. In England, more than a quarter (26.2%) of moves in men's football involved a free transfer.

The report's publication comes after a summer transfer window that broke records and saw the world's richest clubs spend enormous sums in their pursuit of success. And with the Premier League, and England, largely dominating the landscape, it's no surprise that the majority of that money was spent domestically.
