aisiling party candidate in the Madurai Lok Sabha constituency, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has promised to focus on the delayed infrastructure projects in the city.
While campaigning, Jayalalithaa said that the AIADMK would ensure completion of all pending projects in Madurai, particularly the iconic Sethusamudram Ship Channel project.
The controversial project, once underway, aims at creating a navigable channel through the shallow Palk Strait that separates India from Sri Lanka.
However, critics have accused the government of mythological bias, alleging that the project was disrupting the Ramayana-era bridge believed to have been built by the Hindu god Rama.
During her campaign, Jayalalithaa also listed several infrastructure projects in the city, including a new bus stand, suburban train project, and expansion of the airport.
While speaking on the late filing of tenders for these projects, Jayalalithaa blamed the previous UPA regime for setting unrealistic targets in the state.
The chief minister also announced the setting up of a medical college in Thanjavur at an estimated cost of Rs. 500 crore and a super-speciality hospital in Dindigul at a cost of Rs. 100 crore.
These projects will be prioritized to ensure development in the state's southern districts, Jayalalithaa assured.
With just days to go before polling, the focus of campaigns has shifted to battleground states like Tamil Nadu, where the AIADMK is looking to secure a third straight term in the Lok Sabha.
While the DMK-led alliance poses a significant challenge with its promise of a stronger state economy and job creation, the AIADMK continues to bank on its development agenda and strong leadership.
The state has 39 Lok Sabha seats, and the elections will be held in a single phase on April 18.
