FIFA's decision to block Athletic Bilbao's attempt to sign Aymeric Laporte from Al-Nassr is surprising, especially since the Spanish club was confident it would convince the governing body with a tempting offer. But upon closer inspection, the move wasn't as crazy as it seemed on the surface, and FIFA had the right to deny the deal.
Laporte's situation is unusual. The former Manchester City defender wants to leave Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, hoping to join Bilbao after his contract was allegedly misrepresented to him. The Frenchman believed he would only complete a six-month loan deal with an option to buy, but he was sent an unconditional purchase agreement, which he signed, committing him to Al-Nassr for 18 months.
According to reports, Bilbao was ready to pay the 7 million release clause, plus an additional 4 million in incentives, to sign Laporte, who previously rose through the Basque club's youth system before moving to City in 2018. They also promised to pay off the remaining 3 million of Laporte's contract at Al-Nassr. It was a considerable offer considering Laporte earns 6 million per season in Saudi Arabia.
However, FIFA regulations state that any club wishing to sign a player from a club in a different association (in this case, Spain to Saudi Arabia) during the transfer window must respect the period of notice required by the player's contract. In this instance, Laporte only has to give 15 days' notice to leave Al-Nassr, and the Spanish transfer window closes on September 1. Therefore, FIFA ruled out any move.
While it is frustrating for all parties involved, FIFA's decision was the correct one based on the information available. The governing body prioritises the respect for contracts and the stability of clubs, and Laporte must serve the remaining term of his deal in Saudi Arabia. It is a reminder that even in exceptional circumstances, the rules must be followed and embraced.
