Cybercrime has become an increasingly pervasive problem in India, and authorities in Hyderabad have recently taken a stance against it. Four individuals have been arrested by the Cyber Crime police wing of Cyberabad for fraudulent activities, including using fake websites and bulk SMS services to scam citizens.
The police received a complaint in November 2019 from a victim who alleged that she had been contacted via SMS by scammers after making a purchase on a well-known e-commerce website. The perpetrators claimed she had won a lottery worth Rs 7 lakhs or a car, and subsequently, they extracted Rs. 2.3 lakhs from her, allegedly for prize claim charges.
The investigation uncovered that the primary accused, Sandeep, had purchased fraudulent databases and message services from Tausif Ahmed and Vikas Kumar. Additionally, Manikchand Paswan, Sandeep's relative, had assisted in contacting and extorting money from vulnerable individuals.
Cyber Crime officials seized numerous items from the accused, including 12 mobile phones, 2 laptops, a car, fake identification cards, and 19 SIM cards, in addition to the 4 debit cards found.
This crackdown serves as a warning to potential cybercriminals while providing reassurance to citizens that the authorities are taking a proactive approach to deal with growing cyber threats.
