Rs 12.75L siphoned from Secunderabad man's HDFC bank account: How cyber fraudsters hacked his funds

Hyderabad-based cyber fraudsters have made away with Rs 12.75 lakh from a Secunderabad man's HDFC bank account, after hacking into it through a malicious mobile application.

The victim, a 41-year-old man, alerted the police after he noticed suspicious online activity on August 25. He'd received multiple one-time passwords (OTPs), WhatsApp alerts, and calls from people posing as HDFC Bank officials, claiming that a new beneficiary was being added to his account.

The next day, fraudsters added an unauthorised payee to the man's account, then credited a loan of Rs 12,75,204 to his account without his consent. They then siphoned the amount, along with his existing savings of Rs 1.8 lakh, through multiple transactions, four debits of Rs 1.8 lakh each and another of Rs 98,000.

The victim, who denied any responsibility for the fraudulent credit or subsequent debits made from his account, filed a complaint with the Cyber Crime Wing of Hyderabad Police.

The case is currently under investigation.
