As many as 20,414 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol have been registered in Hyderabad, Telangana, India until September of this year, according to Anil Kumar, Additional Commissioner of the Hyderabad Traffic Police. In a statement to ANI, Kumar highlighted the dangers of drunk driving and noted that the traffic police were conducting special drives to deter the practice.
The official stated that a total of 3,823 convictions had been made, and 1084 driving licenses had been cancelled by the concerned court. He also revealed that the Hyderabad Traffic Police had managed to reduce the number of road accidents caused by drunk driving by 12% compared to the previous year.
Kumar emphasized that driving under the influence of alcohol is unsafe for the driver and others, and the traffic police will continue to enforce the law to prevent such accidents from occurring.
This news may surprise many, as India arguably has a serious drinking culture, which occasionally collides with its road culture. However, it is testament to the work of the Hyderabad Traffic Police in cracking down on drunk driving that such a huge number of cases and subsequent convictions have been logged. Let's hope the message continues to get through and that everyone drives safely.
