Sad Tale of a Drug Peddler

Retired Colonel Nagendra Singh, 65, was jailed for 20 years in an NDPS case. The court concluded that drug menace is spreading widely throughout society, and that Singh was aware of this when he committed his crimes.

The accused, Nagendra Singh, is a retired colonel. He had been involved in trafficking narcotics drugs, namely heroin and cocaine, which he obtained from suppliers and then sold to customers. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) conducted searches in September 2020, during which they recovered a large amount of these drugs, leading to Singh's arrest.

The Special Judge for Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) cases in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, noted that the incidence of drug abuse is increasing rapidly in society, especially among young people. The court pointed to the tragic and widespread consequences of drug addiction, especially among the youth, and the need for deterrent punishment to curb such crimes.

Regarding the accused, the court stated that his behavior and actions were incompatible with his career and social status, and that he was very well aware of the harmful consequences of his actions. Therefore, the judge ruled that Singh should serve a sentence of 20 years in prison, with a fine of INR 1 lakh (approximately $1,133).

The judge stated that it is essential to uphold the principles of society and that a long prison term would act as a deterrent against others engaging in such illegal and harmful activities. The case serves as a reminder of the tragic consequences that can stem from drug crimes and the need for stricter enforcement and prevention strategies.
