UK Team Inspects Tihar Jail ahead of Mallya, Modi Repatriation

A high-level delegation from the UK's Crown Prosecution Service has visited India's Tihar Jail to review the facilities ahead of the potential repatriation of two prominent figures wanted in the UK on fraud charges.

According to prison officials, the CPS delegation inspected Jail No. 4, which houses high-security inmates and first-time offenders. The team was given a detailed tour of the prison's premises and briefed on the facilities by Tihar officials. The CPS team also discussed the cases of Nirav Modi and Vijay Mallya, who are currently awaiting extradition orders in Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail and Delhi's Tihar Jail, respectively.

The latest visit comes as part of an increasingly coordinated effort between the Indian and UK governments to have the businessmen sent back to face charges of fraud and financial crimes, which amounted to hundreds of millions of dollars.

Both men have denied the charges, and their legal teams have been vigorously battling their potential extradition.

The visit underscores the importance of ensuring suitable conditions for the extradition candidates, meeting the requirements of the UK's Extradition Act and, thus, demonstrating India's adherence to international legal norms and practices.
