Incidents of eve-teasing, passing lewd comments, and indecent gestures are rising in major areas of Bathinda, a city in Punjab. Recently, three young men attempted to kidnap a girl from Giddarbaha in broad daylight near Fouji Chowk, a bustling intersection. Despite the presence of two police posts, the accused were not arrested. In another incident, a group of four young men chased two girl students up to the Fire Brigade Chowk, where police personnel are deployed, but they managed to escape after making lewd comments about the girls. Fear of social stigma often stops victims from reporting these incidents to the police. Girls also fear for their safety, as many do not live with their families. However, strict action is promised by SSP Naveen Singla.
