Golf is often regarded as a rich man's sport, but Indian cricket legend Yuvraj Singh is out to challenge that notion by espousing the game's benefits to young stars Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma.
While the game is yet to penetrate the larger Indian consciousness, Yuvraj, a golfing enthusiast himself, is keen to stress the calming effect the sport has on athletes.
Speaking at the launch of the inaugural edition of the Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL), Yuvraj told reporters that he had tried to persuade Gill and Sharma, both fellow Punjab natives, to take up the sport.
"I've spoken to Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma as well, to start playing golf. It helps relax your mind, there's a lot of free time when you are on cricket tours, and you don't know what to do. I feel golf is a great sport to relax your mind. It is very hard to find time, but hopefully, they will start soon."
Yuvraj also revealed that cricket legend Kapil Dev, the first Indian golfer to win the Sir Padampat Singhania Trophy in 1995, was his inspiration to take up the sport.
"I started playing golf after watching Kapil Sir. When he won the Indian Open in 1995, I was just 12 years old, and I picked up golf because I liked the sport, and I liked Kapil Sir."
IGPL, backed by the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), seeks to emulate the hugely successful IPL format, with seven City-based franchises competing over 11 events.
The league launches next month, with Team Chandigarh Hispanics comprising Gill and Sharma, joining fellow cricketers Ravichandran Ashwin, Shikhar Dhawan, and Varun Aaron amongst others.
