In the midst of the global race for artificial intelligence(AI) dominance between the US and China, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw hasrevealed that India will develop its own generative AI model.
The announcement was made by the minister at the UtkarshOdisha Conclave, where he shared that the model will be powered by the India AICompute Facility. This facility has secured a total of 19,000 GPUs to create alarge language model (LLM) tailored specifically to India’s needs. Out of these, 15,000 are high-end GPUs, surpassing thegovernment's initial target of 10,000 GPUs. At least six developers have beenselected to roll out the model within 8 to 10 months.
Foundation models are AI systems that are trained on vastdatasets and can serve as the base for building other applications. During apress conference about the India AI Mission, Vaishnaw emphasized that the costof GPU access—after the government’s 40% subsidy—will be less than a dollar perhour in India, making it the most affordable in the world.
This move by the Indian government comes in response to theUS imposing restrictions on the export of AI compute infrastructure andlimiting the use of language models, which are currently dominated by Americantech giants. Once launched, India will join an exclusive group of nations, including the US and China, where local companies are developing cutting-edgeAI models.
