Human Dignity Highlighted As Core Value Of Constitution

Indian Constitution's preamble recognizes human dignity as its core value. It is the very soul of the Constitution, which forms a link between autonomy, equality, and justice. This was highlighted recently by Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai. He emphasized the importance of these values in the context of the global pandemic, as well as the recent dramatic events in Afghanistan. Without these values to anchor us, countries and their people can quickly degenerate, he pointed out.

The CJI highlighted how the concept of human dignity has evolved over time. It is no longer confined to basic survival needs but extends to various facets of life. He cited the example of how the courts have expanded the interpretation of 'life' under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution. It is not just about physical existence but encompasses various intangible aspects of life.

He went on to say that the idea of human dignity resonates with the constitutional promise of a life of dignity and equality to all citizens. It is pertinent to ensure that every individual feels respected and valued, and it is the duty of the State to ensure this.

The CJI called for a collective effort to create an environment where human dignity is preserved and protected. He urged everyone to work towards creating an inclusive society where all individuals can thrive and reach their full potential.

It is important to recognize the integral role that the concept of human dignity plays in shaping the core values of our Constitution. Through dignity and respect, we can create a more just and equitable society for everyone.
