A 14-year-old boy is in police custody in India after allegedly bludgeoning his 10-year-old female neighbor to death in a fit of rage over a missing cricket bat.

The victim, also a student, lived with her family in the city of Hyderabad in India's Telangana state. On Sunday night, the accused allegedly attacked the girl with a cricket bat and a washer when she resisted his attempt to steal the bat from her house. The victim's parents were away at the time of the attack.

Police say the suspect scaled the compound wall to the girl's house, took the bat from her room, and demanded that she return his washer. When she refused, he attacked her with the bat, killing her instantly. The washer was later found under the girl's body.

The boy was arrested on Monday night after an extensive manhunt.

Police are interviewing the suspect's parents and studying CCTV footage from the area to investigate the suspect's possible motives and movements before and after the crime.
