Varun Goud: It's always the team first

Hyderabad all-rounder Varun Goud rates the knock of his life as one against Haryana in the recent Trophy Challenger, and sights to play IPL. He also says his mentor, Sridhar, is like a godfather to him and is the go-to person for advice

Ever since Varun Goud hit a crucial unbeaten 51 off 37 balls to help Hyderabad chase down 153 against Haryana in the recent Trophy Challenger, the all-rounder has been receiving a lot of attention.

This includes the spotlight being on his selector-catching abilities as he's often seen with a catch beside his name on the scorecard. But it's his stunning knock against Haryana that has been rated as his favourite by the Hyderabad all-rounder.

"It was a team requirement and I happened to be there to do the job. I am just happy to play my part in the team's victory. It was a knock of my life, so far, and I would rate it at the top," he said.

With matches and tournaments postponed or even canceled in the past couple of years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 22-year-old has his eyes set on the biggest stage of them all, the IPL.

"I definitely wish to make it to the IPL, sooner or later. I have worked hard on my game and grooming myself to be among the best. Obviously, the IPL is everyone's dream and I am no different," he said.

Varun Goud also spoke about his mentorship with Hyderabad's senior player Arjun Yadav and chairman SR Singh. He calls them his mentors and goes to them for advice and suggestions.

"Arjun sir has been my senior from my under-14 days. I respect him a lot and his suggestions have always helped me," he said. "SR sir has been very supportive and I discuss my professional life and personal problems with him. He has been a godfather to me and I can say Sridhar sir is the go-to person for me," he added.

With the ongoing season being a breakthrough one for the all-rounder, he concluded by stating that the focus is always on the team and the game first before individual performances.

"Team comes first always. If the team wins, it is always a happy mood in the dressing room no matter whether I bat or bowl or not," he said.
