Loss, frustration, and panic are some emotions that have enveloped a young Hyderabad resident after he became a victim of a sophisticated WhatsApp investment scam, allegedly perpetrated by fraudsters.
The victim, a 28-year-old resident of Borabanda, has reportedly lost around Rs.7.6 lakh after being added to a WhatsApp group, which purportedly functioned as an investment group of a private bank. The fraudsters reportedly lured him with attractive promises of 800% returns and daily guaranteed profits. Moreover, they falsely claimed to have ties with the bank and even shared fake certificates from SEBI and a fraudulent trading website.
The victim, who fell for these enticing offers, gradually invested Rs.7.60 lakh by August 23, 2025. The scammers further manipulated him by showing an inflated balance of over Rs.45 lakh and then demanded additional deposits of Rs.9 lakh and 25% commission before allowing withdrawal. When the victim refused and requested deduction from his balance, they blocked his access and eventually stopped responding.
The victim, realizing it was a scam, reported the fraud, having suffered a significant loss of Rs.7.60 lakh. Hyderabad police have issued a warning to citizens to be vigilant against such online investment scams operating through WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, and other fake trading websites.
They advised citizens to not trust WhatsApp groups or unknown people offering guaranteed high returns, as banks and SEBI-registered companies would never operate such investment schemes on social media platforms.
The police urged citizens to verify investment offers on the official SEBI and RBI websites and never transfer money to personal accounts or links shared by unknown persons. In case of suspicious deductions, individuals should lodge a complaint at the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in) or dial 1930.
According to the police, in case of any emergency of cyber frauds, people can call or WhatsApp at 8712665171.
