Fake RTO Challan Links Lead to Loss of Rs 6.01 Lakh in Hyderabad

Hyderabad-based cybercrime officials have warned citizens of the latest modus operandi of fraudsters using fake challan links to access bank accounts. Recently, two incidents have come to light in which victims lost money after downloading APK files received via WhatsApp.

In the first incident, a 48-year-old man lost Rs 1.5 lakh after downloading an APK file containing a fake RTO challan. Two unauthorized withdrawals from his bank account took place, leading to a total loss of Rs 51,226 and Rs 50,000.

In a separate incident, a 41-year-old man discovered four suspicious debits totaling Rs 5 lakh from his HDFC bank account. Officials found that an APK file titled RTA challan 140.apk was installed on the man's phone, granting fraudsters access to his banking credentials.

Officials advised citizens to avoid downloading APK files from unverified sources, even if they appear to come from known contacts. They urged residents to refrain from sharing bank details, OTPs, or personal information, and to immediately file complaints at the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in) or via the Hyderabad Cybercrime Cell at 8712665171.
