Suspect Dies After Canada Mass Stabbing, Crash with Police

A man allegedly behind a mass stabbing in Canada died after crashing a car into a police cruiser but not before leaving 9 victims in critical condition, with even more injured.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, a man in his late 20s allegedly entered a residence in the town of Saanich, just outside Victoria, and began attacking people with a knife. The alleged attacker, since identified as a man named Gabriel Klein, was known to the family and had recently begun acting aggressively, according to CTV News.

Police arrived on the scene at approximately 1:20 pm, where they located the suspect and began pursuing him in a vehicle. The chase came to a climax when the suspect crashed into a police cruiser, resulting in his death and the injury of an officer.

Police have since confirmed that the suspect died due to injuries sustained in the crash. Seven other people remain in hospital, some in critical condition, while another four individuals suffered injuries that were, thankfully, not life-threatening.

"This is an extremely fluid situation," said Andrew Bell, an officer with the Saanich police department, as reported by the New York Times. "It's a very tragic situation. It's unimaginable what those families are going through."

The officer injured in the crash is expected to make a full recovery. As the investigation is still ongoing, officers have not yet stated what led to the pursuit or how the crash occurred.

The events of the early morning have left everyone involved and shocked bystanders reeling, but the police department has asked for discretion and empathy as everyone involved, and the wider community of Victoria, processes this shocking event.
