Drug Network Using LGBTQ+ App Busted in Hyderabad

Hyderabad authorities recently dismantled a drug network operating on a platform intended to protect and empower the LGBTQ+ community. Police seized MDMA drugs worth Rs 15 lakh and arrested two individuals allegedly involved in drug dealing and misuse.

The primary suspect, M. Ramakanth, was not only seeking partners through the app but also using drugs as a means to manipulate and exploit them. Police stated that he would use symbols in their profiles to indicate potential drug users, forcing drugs on some of his partners and harassing them.

The suspect, a 44-year-old divorced man, along with another gay man, Mudavath Prasad, 30, was taken into custody. Police traced the network to a Nigerian national in Bengaluru, who is now facing deportation.

Investigators noted that the Nigerian national was willing to supply drugs to the Hyderabad suspects because they shared his orientation, as he faced reluctance from Bengaluru-based suppliers.

Police identified seven consumers who had become victims of the drug ring, all of whom were LGBTQ+ individuals. Five of these individuals were divorced after their families discovered their sexual orientations.

The seven individuals were located and provided with rehabilitation, and police have stated that symbols and codes were used in the app to signal drug use or sales.

This unfortunate incident sheds light on the unfortunate reality of drug misuse and manipulation within the LGBTQ+ community in India and how dangerous venues for connection and support can sometimes facilitate dangerous and harmful activities.
