Kerala Woman Sentenced to Death for Poisoning Boyfriend

A 24-year-old woman in Kerala has been sentenced to death for the premeditated murder of her boyfriend, nearly two years after the crime. The accused, Greeshma, poisoned her 23-year-old partner, Sharon Raj, in an attempt to end their relationship.

A local court convicted Greeshma and her uncle last week, rejecting her plea for leniency based on her age, academic achievements, and lack of prior criminal history. The court emphasized that the severity of the crime outweighed any mitigating factors. The prosecution presented circumstantial, digital, and scientific evidence to establish her guilt beyond doubt.

Greeshma is now the youngest woman in Kerala to receive a death sentence. Following the verdict, the victim’s lawyer expressed confidence in the court's decision, calling it an "exemplary judgment" and a case that fell under the "rarest of the rare" category, warranting capital punishment.

The incident took place in 2022 when Greeshma poisoned Raj by lacing an ayurvedic tonic with paraquat, a highly toxic herbicide. He succumbed to multiple organ failure 11 days later. Investigations revealed that she had previously attempted to poison him by mixing paracetamol in fruit juice, but he refused to drink it due to its bitterness.

Authorities discovered that Greeshma had meticulously planned the murder after Raj refused to end their relationship despite her impending arranged marriage to an army officer from Tamil Nadu. The court also found her uncle, Nirmalakumaran Nair, guilty of destroying evidence, while her mother, initially taken into custody, was acquitted due to lack of proof.

Raj, a native of Parassala in Thiruvananthapuram district, was a BSc Radiology student at the time of his death. His murder shocked the community, highlighting the extreme lengths to which personal conflicts can escalate. With the verdict now delivered, the case stands as a grim reminder of the consequences of calculated violence.
