Beware: Holding More Than One Voter ID Could Put You Behind Bars

In a stark warning, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has made an assertion that any citizen found possessing more than one Voter ID could face criminal prosecution, as the country gears up for General Elections in the coming months. The alert comes in the backdrop of several instances of individuals wielding multiple voter identification cards coming to light in the recent past. Get ready for a trip to the jail if you're found in such an situation.

The issue hit the headlines in the past with several politicians and citizens registered in more than one constituency in the state of Bihar. This is a clear violation of Section 17A of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and the ECI advised all such persons to surrender their multiple voter IDs to the electoral officers by January 25, 2023.

The alert came after the Electoral Officer of Bihar asked all the District Electoral Officers to scrutinize the records in their jurisdictions and identify the persons having more than one voter ID. The officers were also directed to attach a list of such persons to the notice and publicize it accordingly.

As the clock ticks towards the General Elections, it will be interesting to see how strict the ECI is in enforcing this rule, and if there will be any high-profile names that emerge from this scrutiny.

Keeping in view the vigorous enforcement of the existing laws, citizens are urged to voluntarily comply with this advisory and not become prey to something that can genuinely land them in legal trouble.
