Rising Reports of Eve-Teasing in City Areas

Incidents of eve-teasing, lewd comments, and indecent gestures are rising in major city areas, including the Mall Road area and Ajit Road area. These areas are seeing an uptick in these incidents despite police efforts.

In one recent incident, three young men attempted to kidnap a Giddarbaha-based girl near Fouji Chowk, a busy intersection, in broad daylight. The girl was able to draw a crowd's attention by shouting for help, causing the perpetrators to flee. This incident occurred despite the proximity of two police posts. Although a case was registered against the perpetrators, they remain at large.

Another incident involved a group of four young men who chased two girls to the Fire Brigade Chowk, where police personnel are deployed. The young men were able to escape after making lewd comments towards the girls.

A girl recently filed a complaint with the police, stating that she, alongside her friend, was going somewhere on a scooter when four unidentified men drove up to them in a car and made indecent gestures towards them on Ajit Road. A case under Section 354-D of the IPC and 12 of the POSCO Act was registered against the accused at the Civil Lines police station.

Pooja, an ITI student, noted that boys on motorbikes often roam the Ajit Road area, abusing and physically harassing girls. She says this isn't an isolated incident, as many eve-teasing cases have been reported from the Ajit Road area and its surrounding areas in the past. Often, fear of social stigma prevents victims from reporting these incidents to the police.

SSP Naveen Singla asserts that the police have initiated strict action against those involved in eve-teasing cases, stating that no one is spared from punishment.
