'It's Really Killed...': Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa Calls For Changes In Financial Fair Play Rules

Ezri Konsa calls for relaxing of financial rules as Villa's financial struggles force them to let go of key players.

Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa called on authorities to change the financial rules that have forced the club to sell talented players such as Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle in order to comply with Premier League profit and sustainability rules. The club has had to be very prudent with their finances, and this has had an impact on their performance on the field.

"It's killing us, it's really killed us. You look at the players that have left, it's sad," Konsa told the Daily Mail. "It is difficult to bring players in and keep them, because everyone wants to come and play for Aston Villa, but we have to sell to comply with the rules."

The club has had a staggering overhaul in terms of the coaching staff and the playing squad, which has resulted in a very poor start to the Premier League season despite the lofty ambitions that were showcased at the start of the season.

The club has let go of star players like Steven Gerrard, their manager, and club captain, as well as Ramsey and Ashley Young, while also bringing in new faces such as Alex Moreno, Ben Chrisene, and Denis Zakaria.

However, the changes have not had the desired effect, as Aston Villa currently sit second-bottom on the table, and with the club's Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Christian Purslow, recently departing, things are looking rather bleak for the Villans.

Konsa believes that the club should be given more time to bring the likes of Ramsey through, instead of selling them to bigger clubs, actions which he believes severely affect the club's chances of improving.

"You want to give young players a chance, but if you're going to get punished for it, you can't do it," he said. "You can see what Jacob is doing at Newcastle now, he is doing really well. We had a lot of young players and it is sad to see them go and not get a chance to play here."

Konsa's comments highlight the struggles that many clubs face in the Premier League, as they seek to balance the books while also staying competitive on the pitch.

With the likes of Manchester City and even Liverpool reportedly exploring the possibility of breaking away from the league to create a European Super League, the need for relaxation in financial rules will only serve to strengthen the case of the likes of Aston Villa, who are arguably majorly disadvantaged in the running for major titles despite being one of the most historic clubs in English football.
