Andhra Pradesh farmers protest state acquisition of their lands for a housing scheme, threatening self-immolation and stating that the problem arose with the current ruling party coming to power.
Tada village residents in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district protested against the state government, which intends to take back agricultural land for a house pattas scheme. Protesters threatened to commit suicide if the government failed to address their concerns.
One resident, a woman, stated that their families had cultivated the land for over 60 years and that no government had ever attempted to take it prior to the current administration. She added that they are subjected to discrimination and abuse by ruling party MPs because they are Dalits.
She claimed that officials charged Rs 20,000 for every cent of land and that police threatened daily vacate-orders.
The villagers filed a petition with the Collector, local MLAs, and MRO to prevent the acquisition.
However, opposition to the scheme highlights ongoing inequality in India amid global climate change. Schemes like these offer partial solutions to climate resilience and may be politically exploited for electoral gain, exacerbating social divisions.
Critics argue that unused government land in the area could be developed for the housing scheme instead of agricultural land.
The state government is yet to respond to the protest.
