Indian women's hockey team veteran Vandana Katariya and Lalit Upadhyay have been honoured by Hockey India for their outstanding contributions to the sport. The award was presented to both athletes on the sidelines of the Asia Cup in Rajgir, for their efforts towards improving the sport in the nation.
Katariya, who retired from the international game in October, is a two-time Asian Games medallist, representing India at the 2018 Jakarta Games and the 2022 Hangzhou Games, where the team won a silver and a bronze medal respectively. She was also an integral part of the Indian team that won a historic silver medal at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
Upadhyay, who retired shortly after Katariya, also leaves behind a stellar legacy. He was a key part of the Indian men's team that won an historic bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Additionally, he collected medals at various other international competitions, such as the Asian Games, Asia Cup, and the Commonwealth Games.
Both athletes have served their nation and the sport of hockey with great dedication and merit, and have firmly cemented their places in the sport's history.
Hockey India has recognised their contributions, and will hopefully continue to support the nation's athletes, to further develop the game domestically.
