Private Companies Might Be Required to Report Job Openings to the Government

Private companies typically advertise job openings throughplatforms like LinkedIn and Naukri.com for recruitment purposes. However, itmay soon become mandatory for them to report vacancies across all departmentsand sectors to the government.

The central government is planning to replace the EmploymentExchanges (Compulsory Notification of Vacancies) Act of 1959 with a new SocialSecurity Act. This change aims to create a formal system for sharinginformation about job vacancies. The government is taking steps to reformemployment regulations, with a focus on ensuring stricter compliance. Asignificant part of this initiative is the requirement for companies to reportjob openings to the government. To enforce this, the government is consideringraising penalties for non-compliance from Rs 100 to Rs 50,000, underscoring itscommitment to closely monitor employment practices.

Employment exchanges, which have become inactive over time, areexpected to be revitalized under the new law. According to a report, Maharashtra’s Skill Development, Employment, andEntrepreneurship Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha stated in a press conferencethat the state plans to strengthen employment exchanges and ensure companiesreport vacancies to the state. He added that companies have been neglecting toreport vacancies due to the low penalties, a situation that is set to change.

As part of its 100-day action plan, the Maharashtra government islaunching a dedicated job portal aimed at streamlining job searching in thestate. This platform will serve as a central hub where companies can listvacancies, simplifying the compliance process. While many companies currentlyuse platforms like LinkedIn, the government’s new portal is designed to improvetransparency and accessibility to job opportunities. The effectiveness of thisinitiative will depend on how well companies adopt and engage with the newsystem, which remains to be seen.
