Border tensions spawn fake donation requests

Hyderabad, Dec 11 (IANS): The Telangana Police has warned the public against online fraudsters trying to exploit border tensions with Pakistan for their greedy purposes by soliciting fake donation requests.

The warning came after a man, claiming to be an army man, was arrested for allegedly requesting money from the public in the name of the Indian Army and Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Bipin Rawat, who died in a helicopter crash on December 8.

"The accused, Venkat Rao, allegedly mentioned the CDS' demise and the border issues between India and Pakistan in his donation request email to gullible targets, which mostly comprised retired bank and government employees," Stephen R. Chandana, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cybercrimes), Hyderabad City Police, told IANS.

The police said that the accused had sent out emails to more than 100 people. He was arrested from Hyderabad and has been remanded to judicial custody.

The police warned citizens to be vigilant and not to fall prey to such fraudulent tactics when India was facing challenging times at the borders and to report similar matters to the police or authorities concerned.

"We have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the IT Act, and further investigations are underway," said the police official.
