Nellore narcotics enforcement nets 6 kg of ganja, arrests four suspects
In yet another narcotics bust in Nellore district, police arrested four young men with 6 kg of ganja, netting a street value of around $11,600 (INR 8 lakhs).
The four men, aged between 21 and 27, were intercepted at a checkpoint in Nellore city yesterday. The officers became suspicious after noticing an unusual smell coming from the suspects' cars and on searching the vehicles, found over six kilograms of ganja packed in five bags.
The suspects, all from nearby Andhra Pradesh states, have been detained under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
"We are interrogating them to determine the source and intended destination of the drugs, and their accomplices," said Nellore's Deputy Superintendent of Police, Venkateswararao, adding "we are determined to ensure that Nellore city and district will continue to be drug-free, and will take strict action against anyone dealing in narcotics."
The DSP added that owing to the need for strict social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the police were maintaining an increased presence at checkpoints to ensure that only essential travel was occurring, and that the heightened security had also helped in the prevention of drug trafficking.
The DSP concluded, "we will not hesitate to take strict action against those endangering the people of our district by dealing or using drugs."
The four suspects remain in police custody.
