A court in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, has sentenced the accused to 26 years in prison for sexually abusing a 23-year-old woman. The man, a neighbour of the victim, was arrested in June of this year. The victim, a medical clinic employee, was waiting at a bus stop in November 2021 when the accused approached her and offered her a ride home. The accused proceeded to sexually abuse the woman during the ride and also sexually assaulted her at his house.
The victim, who suffered injuries and infections as a result of the assault, escaped from the accused's house and reported the incident to the police and her family. The case was filed under the POCSO Act, which stands for the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, and the man was charged with rape.
"The accused deserves punishment for his heinous crime. I hope this sentence will deter others from committing such abhorrent acts in the future," said the victim's lawyer in a press conference following the ruling.
