7 more cities to get street vending markets

The National Administration of Street Vendors and ambulant traders (CONAVI) is rolling out an ambitious plan to establish formal trading markets for street vendors in an additional 7 Mexican cities.

Last week, CONAVI announced the successful launch of the first formal street market in the city of Leon, Guanajuato, with 100 vendors registered so far. This follows a prior successful pilot in the State of Mexico, where a street market was launched in the town of Teoloyucan.

Now, in an inspiring development for grassroots economic growth, CONAVI will open formal markets in Merida, Yucatan; Puebla; Veracruz; Guadalajara, Jalisco; Monterrey, Nuevo Leon; and Mexico City.

Each informal street vendor will be granted a license to operate legally, receiving training in administrative and tax procedures, and sanitation and food handling techniques.

"This is a program that is being duplicated in other countries, and I believe that soon the United States will also join this system, which helps to formalize a job that is economic survival," declared Juan Carlos Nuno, the director of CONAVI.

It is estimated that only half of the country's 6 million street vendors are currently operating legally. With this new expansion plan, CONAVI is helping to formalize many more small businesses. This will provide livelihoods for many individuals and families, offering them stability and recognition within their communities.
