Mumbai police arrest dozens for 'indecent behaviour'

Mumbai police have arrested more than two dozen people for indecent behaviour on the city's streets, in a drive targeting those drinking alcohol in public, urinating in the open, and engaging in sexual activity in cars.

The action was taken over 24 hours on Friday, with the police cracking down on "improper behaviour" in public spaces, senior police official apoptotic Nitin Kalra said.

Those arrested include a woman who was found drunk and urinating in public, seven people drinking and creating a ruckus in a car, and a man found having sex in his vehicle.

Other arrests were for "public obscenity", the official said.

The action was supported by the city's nightlife ambassador, actor Sonali Bendre, who tweeted that the drive was to ensure a safer and more secure environment for citizens to live in.

"No excuse for indecent behaviour. Action will be taken against those who can't respect public spaces," Bendre tweeted.

Mumbai has become notorious for public urination, with railway stations, train tracks, and beaches littered with human excrement.

Earlier this month, the state government launched a 'Mission Clean Beach' initiative after thousands of tourists complained of dirty beaches, rampant urination, and irregular cleaning.

The drive lasted 24 hours and resulted in the arrest of 12 people, with others fined for drinking in public and urinating on the streets, senior police official VP Deshmukh said.

The operation was carried out by the city's police department and involved officials from the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation, the statement said.

"All the offenders were booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Bombay Police Act," the statement added. (International News)
