Cybersecurity experts have advised against keeping crucial data, such as pictures of Aadhaar and PAN cards on phones, as fraudsters could use them to access victims' bank accounts or perform fake know-your-customer (KYC) authentication, SIM swaps, or digital loan fraud.
One expert, Rakshit Tandon, urged individuals to use DigiLocker, a government-backed digital vault that provides encrypted cloud storage with strict authentication protocols as a safer alternative to prevent such documents from being exposed to unauthorized apps or cybercriminals. It is essential to add a trusted contact as a nominee who can ensure there is no misuse of sensitive documents in the event of an emergency. Officials have also seen an increase in fraud cases where identity documents were accessed directly from phone galleries. To combat this, police are urging the public to update their phone security settings, use strong passwords, and restrict app permissions alongside shifting sensitive data to secure platforms.
