With Hyderabad's iconic Ganesh Festival immersion approaching, authorities are leaving no stone unturned in ensuring a safe and secure event. Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Joel Davis, outlined extensive plans for the festival, with a particular focus on traffic management and public safety.
The main procession begins at Balapur and makes its way to Hussain Sagar Lake, covering a 19km route. Approximately 1 million devotees are expected to participate, so the Hyderabad Traffic Police, along with other agencies, is working round the clock to ensure a smooth flow of traffic and the safety of the public.
To accommodate the immersion of idols, the GHMC has taken several measures, including the fixing of potholes, the removal of debris, the trimming of trees, and the installation of lighting, drinking water stations, and portable toilets. In addition, CCTV cameras, watchtowers, and public address systems have been set up to ensure monitoring and communication.
Meanwhile, the RTC has adjusted bus routes and signals to avoid congestion, while special measures have been put in place for the Khairtabad Ganesh immersion, with approximately 80 traffic officers managing the 2.5km route from Khairtabad to Hussain Sagar.
A total of 3,183 personnel, including Traffic Police and additional forces, are working in two shifts to ensure the event's smooth execution. Real-time monitoring is made possible by the positioning of high-rise cameras at critical points along the route.
Travelers have been advised to use the PVNR Expressway or Outer Ring Road to reach the airport, while special parking areas have been established at NTR Stadium and other locations.
After the idols are immersed, empty trucks will be rerouted, and a ban on heavy commercial vehicles will be implemented in the city. Additionally, city bus services will be restricted, and checks for drunk driving will be increased for procession drivers. Riot control units have been stationed at Tank Bund and other sensitive spots to maintain order.
Davis emphasized that devotees should avoid conducting pooja ceremonies at crane locations to prevent delays.
With meticulous planning and coordination among various agencies, the Hyderabad Traffic Police aims to ensure a safe and joyous festival for all.
