Fast-bowler Mitchell Starc has announced his retirement from T20I cricket to concentrate on the longest format of the game and prepare for the defence of the Ashes in 2023. The pacer felt that he had a lot more to give to Test and ODI cricket and that he wanted to focus on The Ashes and ODI World Cup, which are set to happen in two years' time. The 33-year-old reflected on his T20I career, saying "I felt I had a lot more to give to ODI and Test cricket and continue to enjoy the challenges of playing the longest format of the game,"
Starc, who has taken 31 wickets in 22 T20I games, said he wanted to focus on the longer format of the game. He said, "I feel it's in the best interest of the team and my body to focus on this format and spend more time working on my bowling in the nets."
He added that he's looking forward to experiencing the "exciting new era" for Australian cricket, highlighting the T20 World Cup triumph and the upcoming ODI series against England, India, and New Zealand.
Starc has been a key player in the Australian team, taking a combined 253 wickets in 83 ODIs and 51 Tests. His decision comes after a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign in the UAE, where Australia was eliminated in the group stages.
The fast bowler concluded by saying, "I'm looking forward to experiencing a new environment and getting amongst the group for what is shaping up to be a huge couple of years."
This move would see Starc, who has taken 253 wickets in ODI and 51 in Test matches, focus on preparing for the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2025 Ashes series.
