Israel Targets Hezbollah Sites in Lebanon, Accuses Group of Ceasefire Breach

On January 31, the Israeli military confirmed that it conducted strikes on several Hezbollah targets in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley and along the Syrian-Lebanese border. The targets included a facility used for underground weapons development and another linked to the smuggling of arms into Lebanon. This move came after Israel accused Hezbollah of breaching the ceasefire agreement, which had been established after the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah intensified in late November 2023.

Israel also claimed to have intercepted a surveillance drone launched by Hezbollah on Thursday, further escalating tensions. This incident was described as a clear violation of the ceasefire, which was intended to halt hostilities between the two sides. The ceasefire, brokered with U.S. support, includes a 60-day extension for the withdrawal of Israeli troops, with a new deadline set for February 18.

Despite the extension, Israel has continued to carry out multiple airstrikes on Lebanese territory, resulting in the deaths and injuries of over 100 people since the agreement’s extension. The most recent attack was a drone strike in the southern Lebanese town of Majdal Selm, which injured at least five individuals. The ongoing tensions highlight the fragility of the ceasefire and the volatile situation in the region.
