Telangana is on high alert as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning predicting heavy to very heavy rain in the state over the next four days. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for four districts of Telangana, Nirmal, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, and Adilabad, for October 14 and 15.
As a result, the Telangana government has announced that all schools and colleges will remain closed on October 15 and 16 as a precautionary measure. An official statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said that "Given the IMD's forecast of heavy rains, Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao has instructed the officials to take necessary precautions and ensure there are no casualties."
On Sunday, October 9, heavy rains resulted in flooding in Hyderabad, the state's capital, causing traffic congestion and disruptions in power and communication networks.
Telangana Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development K. T. Rama Rao tweeted, "Special emphasis should be placed on ensuring no human casualties occur due to the rains. Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao is constantly monitoring the situation and has instructed the officials to be prepared."
The IMD warned that the upcoming rainy season would be more robust this year, from September 2022 to October 2022. It also predicted that the maximum temperature in northern India will decrease gradually from October 15, 2022, onwards.
It further predicted that the upcoming southwest monsoon, from October 25, 2022, to September 2023, will be weaker than previous years, with below-normal rainfall likely over parts of north-western India.
