Nellore turns to robots for silt removal

Nellore Municipal Administration in Andhra Pradesh has taken the lead in adopting sophisticated technology to ease the burden on workers and reduce financial costs. The city has introduced the All Powered Robotic Sorting System (APRSS) to remove silt from drains and irrigation canals.

The introduction of the technology, Zenco Robotic Mechine (ZRM), in a major drain in the city's Ramurthy Nagar is a first in the state. According to Nellore Municipal Commissioner Y O Nandan, the drains and canals have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes, leading to several viral infections in the population. He added that the silt also causes drain water to flow onto the streets during the rainy season.

To overcome these issues, the municipal administration plans to remove silt from drains and canals in a phased manner, reducing the labor intensity and financial costs associated with the work. Removal of silt with ZRM is expected to be more efficient, even in deep drains, wells, and canals, reducing the time and financial cost involved.

The Commissioner expressed satisfaction with the innovative procedure, noting that it would address the problems of labor intensity and high financial cost.

This move could set a precedent for other cities in India to adopt technology to tackle civic issues.
