The historic wins for Indian boxing at the World Boxing Championships have ended. Nikhat Zareen entered the next round but it was curtains for Lovlina Borgohain and Hitesh Gulia.
Indian female boxers have been making the nation proud at the ongoing World Boxing Championships in Abu Dhabi. After an incredible six medals were secured by the pugilists, the country was looking forward to more historic wins. Unfortunately, as multiple Indian boxers stepped into the ring on Tuesday, December 6, only one could progress to the quarter-finals.
Lovlina Borgohain and Nikhat Zareen gave tough fights but lost to their respective opponents. Borgohain, who won a bronze medal in the 2019 World Championships, faced a comprehensive defeat against former champion, Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey. Meanwhile, Zareen was able to get the better of former junior world champion, Kim Maghen.
The 28-year-old Indian woman defeated Maghen 3-2 to set up a quarter-final clash against Japan's Madoka Wada on Wednesday, December 7. This was Zareen's first victory at the World Boxing Championships after having lost her opening match in the previous edition in 2019.
Unfortunately, Hitesh Gulia couldn't recover from his first-round loss to Russia's Vadim Musaev on Monday, December 5. Gulia became the first Indian male boxer to compete in the World Boxing Championships in 2015.
These developments have certainly put a dampener on Indian boxing enthusiasts' spirits who were hoping for more medals in the male and female categories. However, Zareen has managed to keep the hopes alive for a historic bronze medal. We await tomorrow's quarter-final clash with bated breath.
Quote:
"I'm happy I could make the country proud and live up to the expectations. My strategy was to stick to my strengths and not rush into things. I wanted to make the most of this opportunity."
