Breaking Down Drug Barriers: Rs. 12,000 Cr Mephedrone Racket Busted in Cherlapally

In a significant strike against the illegal narcotics trade, the Mumbai Crime Investigation Branch disbanded a large-scale mephedrone (MD) manufacturing facility, located in Cherlapally, Hyderabad.

The raid, which commenced on August 8, was initiated following the arrest of Fatima Murad Shaikh, a 23-year-old Bangladeshi national, near Kashimira bus stop in Mira Road.

During questioning, Shaikh revealed that her supplier, headquartered in Telangana, served as the root of her operation.

Consequently, a team of 15, comprising three senior officers, was dispatched to Hyderabad to further investigate.

On September 5, the team zeroed in on the Vagdevi Laboratories Pvt Ltd in Navodaya Colony, Cherlapally, where they discovered a sprawling MD production hub.

Police seized:

5.8 kilograms of mephedrone35,500 litres of precursor chemicals950 kilograms of powder and raw materials27 mobile phones, four vehicles, weighing machines, and manufacturing equipment

The 12 suspects connected to the racket were also arrested, with the operation led by Inspector Pramod Badakh, and overseen by the Additional Commissioner of Police and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime).

Authorities noted that the facility's capabilities underscored the magnitude of the network, and the potential harm such a large-scale operation could have caused had it not been halted.

This latest raid and arrest are a stark reminder of the sizeable challenge India faces in tackling the pervasive drug trade.
