Avian influenza reaches Indian shores

In a dreaded development, bird flu hit the shores of Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district after tests confirmed the presence of the avian influenza virus in samples of dead chickens, authorities said on Thursday, February 16.

The crisis follows the deaths of several chickens in two villages over the past few days. District collector Hari Narayan convened an emergency meeting with animal husbandry department officials and instructed them to undertake all necessary steps to contain the bird flu's spread.

He announced the closure of all chicken shops within a one-kilometre radius of Chatagutla of Podalakur mandal and Gumalladibba of Kovur mandal, where the deaths took place.

The collector has appealed to the public to remain calm, adding that the health department was vigilantly monitoring the situation and taking all precautionary measures to prevent human infection.

"Any sudden increase in fever, cough, or sore throat symptoms should be reported to the nearest health centre," he said.
