Syrian fundraising stopped in its tracks

Three Syrians living in India have been arrested for allegedly collecting donations for Gaza victims. The funds, however, did not reach their intended destination and instead remained in their personal accounts. The three men, Zakaria Haitham Alazar, Ahmed Ohad Alhabash, and Yusuf Khalid Alzahar, were intercepted by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch on September 3rd, according to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP).

Since the conflict between Palestine and Israel erupted in 2014, many groups, charities, and individuals have collected funds to send to the victims in Gaza. While many of these campaigns were legitimate, some were fraudulent, pointing to a need for increased vigilance when donating to these causes.

DCP M.R. Kharb confirmed that the three men were arrested based on suspicions of money laundering and that further investigation will uncover the exact amount collected and the account balances. Kharb stated, "We are also trying to find out how much money they have collected after depositing the funds in their personal accounts and what they spent it on."

The DCP went on to encourage donors to approach established charitable organizations with a proven track record of transparency when making donations. These donations can be made using instruments like cheques, demand drafts, or through bank accounts to ensure trackability and avoid fraud.
