AP's ruling party gears up for showcase conference

Andhra Pradesh's ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is gearing up for its annual three-day Mahanadu conference in the copper city of Kadapa, with the attendance target of one lakh party workers.

Top leaders, including chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, will attend the conference, which starts on Friday, to chalk out the party's strategy for the state and local body elections due early next year.

The party has contracted a private agency to organise the event, hiring aluminium scaffolding for the hastily erected stainless steel podium, which will sit atop the Pendurthy reservoir.

Over 1,000 TDP functionaries will address the meeting, and all state ministers, MPs, MLAs, MLCs, and other leaders will attend. The conference will also grant an opportunity for the party's rank and file from villages to raise their concerns and suggestions.

"This will be a big leap forward in organisational expansion, and we will show our strength to the world," senior TDP leader and former minister P. Pushpasreevani said.

The TDP, which has been suffering from a series of defeats in recent elections, is using the platform to showcase its strength in the run-up to the rural and urban body polls.

The party has faced setbacks in recent times, with the BJP opting out of the alliance in Andhra Pradesh and the TDP failing to make a dent in Telangana.

The conference, held in the hometown of Mr. Naidu, will also be used to reflect on the achievements of the TDP-led coalition government, in power in the southern state since 2014.

"We will take stock of what we have achieved and what we could not. We will ensure that we hear the voices of all our party members," Mr. Naidu said.

The TDP chief will deliver the opening and concluding speeches at the conference, while his son and minister Nara Lokesh will address the gathering on the second day.

TDP sources said about 40,000 people are expected to attend the meeting on Friday, the highest since Mr. Naidu became the chief minister for a second time in 2014.

"It will be a huge gathering. All arrangements are in place to ensure that it is a smooth affair," a senior TDP leader said.
