Young women in Bathinda, India, are facing a surge in harassment, with culprits using foul language and even making indecent gestures at girls and women going about their daily business.

Recently, three young men tried to kidnap a woman in broad daylight in one of the city's busiest areas. Fortunately, she cried for help, and the would-be kidnappers fled the scene. However, the police were unable to arrest them, despite the incident occurring near two police posts. This is just one incident in a spate of similar cases in the Ajit Road area, a hub of coaching institutes that attracts many young women.

Female students and professionals say that they are constantly harassed while going about their daily lives and that many more incidents go unreported than those that make the news. The local police have claimed that they are taking stringent action against perpetrators, but this has done little to alleviate the situation on the ground.

One student, Pooja, commented that male motorbike riders often harass female walkers, and that Ajit Road and its surrounds have seen many such cases in the past. Often, fear of stigma prevents victims from reporting crimes to the police. Adding to this, many women who study or work away from home feel vulnerable in these situations.

Despite the SSP claiming that the police are tackling the issue, locals feel that more needs to be done to protect women from being harassed.
