The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the southern states of Telangana and coastal Karnataka, warning of heavy rainfall in some areas.
Lasting from Wednesday afternoon into Thursday, the IMD warned of "heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall" especially in Telangana, which includes the city of Hyderabad.
Officials have advised residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary and to be aware of traffic diversions and warnings regarding low-lying areas.
The alert also implies a warning of intense rainfall for Coastal Karnataka, where officials have been told to brace for intense weather conditions.
Heavy rains are forecast for Hyderabad over the next couple of hours, and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the police department have been placed on high alert.
The city is particularly crowded this week as it celebrates Ganesh Chaturthi, with masses flocking to see the famous Khairatabad Ganesh statue in the center. Traffic police and authorities are working to control the crowds and have put many traffic diverters in place.
The coastal states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have both been on alert to face high-speed winds and intense rainfall, as reported by local media.
Moderate to heavy rains are predicted in areas such as Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Manyam, Alluri, West Godavari, Eluru, NTR, and Guntur districts of Andhra Pradesh.
