The Opposition in Puducherry is protesting the proposed privatisation of the Union Territory's electricity department and plans to intensify their opposition with rallies and protests. The opposition bloc, comprising the DMK, Congress, and Left parties, has already been disrupting proceedings in the assembly and plans to up the ante with protests outside Raj Nivas, the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor.
According to reports, the opposition plans to forcibly enter Raj Nivas and stage a 'gherao' protest, similar to what was seen in the Parliament complex in Delhi during the protests against the Farm Laws. The Opposition also plans to hold torch light rallies across Puducherry and protests at events where Chief Minister and Ministers are participating.
The opposition has accused the government of attempting to privatise the power department to fulfil corporate interests at the cost of public interest.
The Chief Minister, however, maintains that the move is to reform the power sector and assured that the consumers wouldn't bear the brunt of any decision.
Only time will tell whether the government will yield to pressure from the opposition and reconsider their decision on the power sector privatisation or continue with all guns blazing.
