A Lingering Dispute: Kashmir in 1947 and Beyond

When partition occurred in 1947, few could have foreseen that the Kashmir dispute would endure for decades as one of the most intractable conflicts in South Asia. The Dogra Kingdom of Jammu and Kashmir, once a princely state, became the focal point of a bitter territorial contest between India and Pakistan, with both countries laying claim to the region in its entirety. Despite adjustments in border lines, particularly between China and Pakistan, the dispute remains unresolved.

The Simla Accord and Diverging Views

The 1972 Simla Accord implicitly acknowledged the partition of Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan, yet both countries continue to hold firm to their respective positions. Pakistan refuses to accept the legitimacy of India's occupation, pointing to the Instrument of Accession signed by Maharaja Hari Singh in 1947. Conversely, India rejects Pakistan’s control over Azad Kashmir and the Northern Territories of Hunza and Gilgit, dismissing Pakistan’s claim to any rightful role in the dispute.

Both nations continue to bolster their claims over the region, and international mediation has largely failed to make headway.
