Hyderabad's Gender Parity Problems Highlighted By Sexual Harassment Cases

Harassing circumstantial evidence. That's what the Hyderabad Police termed several hundred sexual harassment cases that were logged in just one district of the Telangana state capital in recent months.

The substantial number of cases pointed to a larger problem within the city's education systemone that extends well beyond instances of sexual harassment.

Many of the complaints, which ranged from vulgar remarks to physical contact and sexual assault, were made by students against fellow students, teachers, and school staff at a single women's college in Hyderabad.

One student commented, "It's scary just thinking about it happening to someone else, let alone it being a friend or family member."

The police have since completed an initial investigation into these cases, returning a substantial number of arrests and ongoing investigations.

While these particular cases of sexual harassment may have prompted a heightened alertness, there is still a long way to go before sexual harassment in Hyderabad, across India, and throughout the world, is eradicated.

The bigger issue, however, is one of gender parity and a lack of respect for women in Indian society as a whole. Harassment and general insensitive attitudes towards women are deeply ingrained in the culture, making serious change increasingly necessary.

These recent cases have shone a light on the work that still needs to be done to ensure every woman, girl, and gender non-conforming person can feel safe and study, work, and move freely without being subjected to harassment or discrimination.
