Man Films Indians in Dallas, Calls for H1-B Visa Cancellation

A man's video of Indians celebrating what looks like a cultural festival in Dallas sparked backlash after he called for H1-B visas to be "cancelled". Users criticized the man for profiling and stereotyping while pointing out that the video likely featured a cultural event.

Last week, a man identifying himself as Kevin Richardson posted a now-deleted video on Facebook with the caption "Want kids to grow up in the US, not India". In the video, Richardson films Indians walking around a parking lot and exiting a van, reportedly in Richardson, Dallas County, Texas. The man then lambasts the crowd for being foreigners and calls for the H1-B visa programme to be abolished, alleging that it hurts American citizens.

The video has since gone viral after being posted on Instagram by journalist Raja Shah, leading to a slew of public reactions. After considerable debate, Richardson has since deleted the original video and issued an apology.

Despite the apology, the episode underscores America's ongoing debate over immigration and xenophobia.

Indian-Americans are one of the wealthiest and most educated ethnic groups in the US. Between 60 and 70 per cent of all H1-B visa holders in the US are Indians.

These visas are highly sought after by Indian IT professionals, many of whom fill the growing need for tech talent in the United States. The Trump administration has tightened H1-B visa rules and increased scrutiny of such applications, but their abolition has been deemed impractical and even harmful by many experts.
