Chris Gayle has expressed his disappointment over Indian selectors' decision to ignore promising batsman Sarfaraz Khan, claiming they have used the batsman's weight against him.
In an explosive interview, the former West Indies captain has launched a scathing attack on the India selectors, claiming they have missed the mark with their treatment of Sarfaraz Khan.
Gayle, who played 42 Tests and 301 ODIs for the Caribbean nation, highlighted Khan's impressive domestic batting averages of 53.40 in Tests, 54.70 in ODIs, and 48.80 in T20s and argued that these figures are unmatched by anyone in world cricket.
The opener, who turned 41 last month, claimed that Khan's weight has been unfairly used against him and that the selectors are trying to push the talented batsman to "change his appearance before they give him a chance."
"I think he's (Sarfaraz) a very, very talented guy. If he comes and plays for India, he has to be extremely fit... They're trying to push him to change his appearance before they give him a chance. They're using his weight against him... That's very, very wrong," Gayle said in an interview with Sportskeeda.
The Big Show urged the selectors to focus on Khan's batting abilities and include him in India's Test team, citing his faith in the youngster's capacity to adapt to the demands of the longest format.
"I would like to see him get a chance... Give him a chance in the Test match team, and I think he will adapt. He will understand that this is the format where you really have to be fit and lean," he added.
Off the back of a staggering triple-hundred in the Indian Premier League, Gayle's comments are a bold indictment of India's selection policy and will spark lively debate.
It remains to be seen how these revelations impact Sarfaraz Khan, who is currently participating in the ongoing Ranji Trophy.
The promising 23-year-old, who has been included in the Mumbai squad for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, has scored 19,473 runs across all formats in 286 games with 48 hundreds and 69 half-centuries.
