In a groundbreaking move to reinforce efforts against human trafficking and bolster child protection systems, the Hyderabad police launched Telanganas first Anti Human Trafficking Unit - Victim Assistance Centre (AHTU-VAC) at the Womens Police Station in Basheerbagh. The centre will provide legal support, psychological counselling, shelter referrals, vocational rehabilitation, and assistance with societal reintegration to survivors of human trafficking. The new centre will also support child protection efforts by addressing cases of missing children, forced labour, and abuse.

The Hyderabad Police Commissioner, K. Sreenivasa Reddy, stated that the centre adopts a victim-centric approach and aims to be a safe sanctuary for those freed from human trafficking. We are collaborating with civil society organizations to facilitate survivors long-term rehabilitation, he told the media. The unit will also monitor bonded labour, child labour, forced marriages, and sexual exploitation cases, which often go underreported.

The centre intends to strengthen the institutional response to trafficking by improving collaboration between law enforcement and non-governmental organizations, which typically serve as the first point of contact during rescues. Officials anticipate that this collaborative model of survivor support will function as a blueprint for similar units across Telangana, significantly impacting the states anti-trafficking framework.
